What most people (including Jim, it would seem) fail to realize is that almost everyone back then, whether from the North or South, was racist toward black people in some way. Even President Lincoln. The North simply didn't have "need" of slaves, because they were more industrialized rather than plantation-dependent, and the climate was different. (Don't get me wrong, slavery was a great evil, and a huge blotch on our nation's history. But both sides are to blame.)
If we're going to take down Confederate monuments, we'll need to take down the Union ones as well, to be consistent. Or better yet, just leave them alone. They represent brave men who fought for their families, their people, and their land. |
