I think of Joel Osteen and wife as motivational speakers, not preachers. Even when they do have the history down pat, they can still come up with some bizarre interpretations. Not that other preachers haven't done the same thing.

Boy, this has raised the hackles of many people (just do a web search to see all the articles written about it)
Was it just a publicity stunt, or a "Freudian slip?" Of course, she has defended herself (see christianpost.com for that one), saying the people in the congregation knew what she meant.
If we are happy, then God is happy.

I guess the 'heroes of the faith' in Hebrews 11 were all happy, right? Stephen was happy to be stoned? Jesus saying 'take this cup from me' was a printer's error?

It also reminds me of the joke about the Puritan who couldn't fall to sleep, because he was worried that somewhere, somehow, someone was having fun.
Is our religion about making people (including ourselves) suffer? Some think the Catholics are expert in this, calling it 'penance' but I think it is a common trait of humans.

Head Start programs have been proven to be of no effective use, when studied by govt researchers. In other words, kids who went to Head Start programs did no better than kids who did not.
In this case, they need to find another program like karate or ballet that the kids could be doing, and see if those kids are doing better than the 44 kids in the music program.
And how about a chess club? I would think those kids would be pretty smart and do well in academics later.
And then, hey, why not get real crazy and compare them to 44 kids who are home schooled?

When I saw the name "Wendy Davis" it reminded me; my hope was that she had left the political scene, after it was revealed that she had married an older, wealthier man and then divorced him, getting a good portion of his wealth. With that wealth, she now runs for Governor of Texas. I hope the opposition will rise up against her.
The phony charges made against the current Governor were part of the media campaign to run him down. Isn't he right to fire a practicing alcoholic who is running an agency in his govt?

All this talk about what did she 'really' mean by her words reminds me of the words "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work makes you free) that the Nazis used in their concentration camps.
Someone wrote that in order to change a culture, you change the language first (and then educate the youth accordingly). Who can forget President Bill Clinton saying 'well, it depends on what 'is' means'?

Older people hang onto old concepts like having babies born in farmhouses; younger people cannot relate to this!

For Osteen's audience, happiness means finding a parking spot close to the front door of the mall. For the older people, they think he means the Joy of the Lord mentioned in the Bible.

Many secular people are working on what makes us happy--a recent article I saw said that it is unexpected victories, like getting an A in algebra when you only thought you would get a C. Or the cooler summer temps that many Up North have experienced.

After reading the other story about how many young mothers are cohabiting rather than marrying, it occurred to me that there might be a connection with the factors involving home schooling. We might assume that these young mothers have less income than married young mothers, and that would also mean there is less chance of them home schooling--they need to go to work to pay the bills and the govt schools are free, and now the govt schools even promote 'magnet schools' in special interests like math, science, or art.
No frustration here, but simply observing the news as it rolls in every day.
Does anyone remember the Scientific Reading Associates materials in elementary school? I used them and enjoyed their challenge. I wonder if they were part of a national "Common Core" program.

“ I thought it was about justice, not terrorism ”
I thought the issue was justice--why do the police kill a robbery suspect with his hands up? You don't see that on TV police shows, do you? Shouldn't Christians be asking for justice?

Welcome to the World of the 21st Century, Christians who read news on SermonAudio.
Remember these facts, like an earlier story (maybe posted here last month?)about the low level of marriages and high cohabitation rate for young people, when it comes time to do any kind of outreach to them, especially events like Vacation Bible School.
When a young mother visits your church with child in hand, what welcome will you give her? Will you stand with an accusing finger and say, "Go and sin no more" before letting her sit in your 'worship service?' Check out the titles of the sermons that are posted just above the comments line for this story.

Common Core is the latest 'best thing' in public education. What were the previous ones? Don't you think there were other ones? "New Math" is one that comes to mind.

It was interesting to read the comments added to the article linked here, especially one from a college professor who gave many reasons to do home schooling.

I think most people will not do home schooling since they depend on two incomes to pay high debt load from college, car loans, medical bills, etc.

So, once again, the conservative right can stand in their corner with their ten percent and rant about another issue that few people care about! They should care! Yes, I agree. But they don't for economic reasons mentioned above.
Now if we could combine home schooling and changing child-labor laws, we could see more people doing it.

SermonAudio's Pilgrim Covenant Church with Pastor Ralph Ovadal has been warning about the immigration situation for a long time; his voice was one of the few saying the RC support for it was part of their strategy to increase their numbers. On their website they have many resources to reach out to RC people. And an excellent article about how RC didn't oppose Obama during elections time like they did against John Kerry on the abortion issue.
Politically, it makes you wonder why is this a crisis now when illegal immigration has been going on for a long time (in fact, Bush passed the law being abused today to allow non-Mexicans to enter the US), so why couldn't Obama pass changes to the existing system when Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate?
Another point: why are Central Americans still living in the US from the days when Hurricane Mitch hit down there? that was many years ago--haven't those countries recovered?

I knew it!
I knew it!
There had to be a financial settlement, and it would be huge!
This sends a clear message to any other local group that considers leaving the denomination.
Of course, without looking at the details, you can't say if this is a huge penalty or a big discount on the real estate involved.

It would be interesting to go back to the similar situation in California that was reported in SA last year (or before), to see how that local group is doing to pay back the millions they had to pay.

What could happen?
This group could decide to sell the bldg to a Muslim/Mormon/Jehovah's Witnesses group for more money, and relocate to another location.
