This is great news--though when I consider that I've got five kids, it seems that somebody's not doing their part! :^)

The Couple to Couple League that John mentions does, by the way, provide some really good information--though I certainly do not endorse many of the specifically Catholic parts of its presentation. I wish there were a fundamental equivalent of it!

Interesting claim; she apparently ignores the fact that the Bible does not attack Rome for failing to provide for the education and medical care of the poor, and does not fault Rome for failing ot have a progressive income tax. She also seems to ignore the fact that the main roles for government (Romans 13) are to punish the wicked and commend the just.

Any help for the poor from government, Biblically speaking, is by protecting them from those who would victimize them.

Nice rehash of Galbraith with a thin (very thin) veneer of Scripture, though. Too bad that the politics/economics of Galbraith are a chief contributor to human misery around the world.

Here in Minnesota, we've got something planned for the next few months that mostly solves this problem.

I disagree with certain positions he's taken, but I do hope that his church gives him a case of "emeritus" so he can continue to minister as his strength enables him. Do God's servants retire?

You guys are being a little bit too cruel about this. Yes, he engaged in politics, and probably amassed too big a church to shepherd. But that doesn't negate the rest he did.

Hold off on the ArsTechnica conclusion; if the lecture/paper contained little to grab on to, how much more the critique?

Moreover, one basic error made by the writer in the ArsTechnica article is that evanescent waves do have energy. They do not deliver energy to anything, but they do have energy in them.

Which error might suggest that the AT writer might not be exactly qualified to critique the authors of the article.

Neither am I, for what it's worth, and I'm skeptical. That said, this is at least the second article I've seen in the past 5 years that suggests that the speed of light is not constant over all time and space. It's interesting to contemplate the possibilities with this.

Regarding profits, World Magazine did an article a few years back about the buying and selling of parts, and of course clients do pay for prenatal infanticide procedures.

Regarding this case, it seems to me that the "doctors" are going awfully close to lawsuits, as whatever they use to kill the baby will also go through the placenta to the mother. They're more or less banking on the dosage and the time to conduct the poison to protect them.

(it could also be directly injected into the mom by accident)

Scary stuff, and Dr. Mengele would be proud of them.

You know, this is actually wonderful news. A great portion of Americans come from "shorter" stock, such as Hispanic or Asian, especially when compared with Europeans. What is happening here is that Europe is reaping the benefits of not being starved in childhood for more or less the first time in history.

Pastor Mike, John Bunyan was an uncertified pastor. I take it that you reject "Pilgrim's Progress" because of this? His ministry obviously was not authentic, nor was that of the Pilgrims.

Also, all of the instructors of the Founding Fathers were uncertified as teachers. I assume that you feel the Constitution is a bunch of rubbish, and that George Washington's dad was guilty of child abuse?

Other child abusers of this type; J.S. Bach, Martin Luther, John Wesley's parents, and more. May we get more, not less, such child abusers!

Actually, that balanced diet does include "Chez Mac." Keep in mind that one of the big things that made us taller was the inclusion of protein in our diet.

(and apart from the pop and fries, McDonald's isn't that bad for you, in moderation....)

Now certainly we might do well to stop subsidizing maize, pushing our people to eat grains, fatty foods, meats, and dairy in lieu of vegetables and fruits. However, let's not forget for a second that we should be rejoicing that Europe and Asia are finally getting enough to eat.

How wonderful that other nations in the world are finally getting the benefits of a balanced diet that Americans have taken for granted for generations!

Jim from Ephrata, thanks for enunciating well my sole reluctance to endorse the death penalty; not that it isn't just when imposed on a murderer, but that it seems to be imposed so often in a Biblically unjust way--most notably without a plurality of witnesses.

(though to be sure, I'd include forensic evidence as a witness, as long as it didn't depend solely on the arresting officer)

Appalling. I'm sending a note to them to remind them that 1 Corinthians 6 tells them to rather be wronged than to go before secular courts.

It's really frustrating how people get a brilliant headline using the wrong units to measure something. Come on, what's wrong with measuring divorce as a percentage of marriages, instead of a percentage of adults?

God be praised, I also wasn't there, but my counsel for those trapped in "welcome criminals" ("gun-free") zones is to press the attack, hopefully with a nonlethal weapon like pepper spray on hand, or throwing a book or computer at the guy's head.

I read an article this morning by a former Marine, and the advice for those caught in an ambush (and relentlessly trained into them) is to fire into it and advance. Maybe it's time to stop training people to roll over and play dead for attackers.

It's worth noting that they're talking about basic rules of skull design and the requirement that structures work together, as if they were, well, designed. Good for them!

It's also worth noting that they're trying to create a timeline of human descent based (at least at their estimated time-frame of 1.5-2 million years ago) based on no more than two skulls. I'm not quite sure that, as a trained statistician, I'd put much confidence in a line drawn through only a few points like this.

One would have assumed that this case should have gone the other way had the defendants simply noted that, whatever occurs in pornography, "speech" isn't exactly an accurate description.

I've got dear friends who hope to be missionaries in Sweden, as well as a step-dad descended from Swedes. What I've learned is that the Swedes really don't have a good translation of the Bible (from my missionary friends), and that it's always been common for Swedes to have a baby about five months after marriage. (in other words, the wedding came when the bride was "late," and this intentionally)

So it's worth asking whether the Swedes were ever evangelized in the first place. They have churches, but a vibrant Gospel seems to have been denied them.

I dare suggest that if the district feels the need to "gag" students from telling their parents what goes on in the classroom, the parents ought to "fire" the school board and every administrator involved with this.
