Dr. Tim and Unprofitable,

Thanks for your input. I would simply say that after the Day of Pentecost, the church at Jerusalem would have had a tough time using one cup,...it would be a little too big, same with the one loaf, for that matter.

From the one pitcher I pour the wine into a few of the communion cups in the presence of the congregation, as well as breaking the bread in their presence to signify it coming from the one cup and the one loaf.

We can read into such things too much, just like when people spiritualize the parables or Revelation too much.

Once more, in I Corinthians 11, the church could not be drunk on grape juice. If that was the evil element to use, surely the Holy Spirit would have directed Paul to address it.

Guys, you miss the point, obviously, no one uses alchohol for medicinal purposes in a country like ours, unless they use Robitussin or others that may have it in them. The point is they did use such alcohol in the Scriptures. It was their morphine for pain-killing purposes as far as medicine goes and Timothy for his stomach's sake. All drugs are not bad or evil. Depraved sinners like ourselves who abuse are evil. Just like guns don't kill anyone, people kill people.

As far as the Lord's Supper is concerned, my family has a history of alcoholism, I was a party animal getting drunk before God saved me, but, by trusting in God's power to keep me from abusing alcohol and really just using it in the Lord's Supper, I've never had a problem. May we not limit the Holy One of Israel and His Power to enable us to keep the ordinances as they were delivered originally, in essence and in substance.

I believe there is a reason why they call it a drink. Jesus said to drink ye, when instituting the Lord’s Supper. I suppose you’re trying to be funny?

There is a difference in drinking wine for medicinal and ecclesiastical purposes and drinking to get drunk.

They used wine in the Lord's Supper is indisputable. During Prohibition churches started being politically correct and changed the wine to grape juice which is taking unlawful and unscriptural liberties.

How would you interpret Proverbs 31:6 "Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts." These drugs were lawful in their appropriate purposes much like morphine, drugs for depression, etc...

I don't drink and none of the membership does, but, we believe in keeping with the New Testament pattern and use wine in small communion cups.

Yes, John UK, too many have departed from the original intent and message behind the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper and that is indicative of our moving ever closer to the last of the last days before Christ's return. The culture here in America and even around the world has changed so rapidly it is enough to make your head spin.

We will be praying for you as you pursue God's will in these matters.

May our Lord help us all to be found faithful until we pass from this life.

John UK, thanks for your feedback. There is a Pastor Robert Ellis that I know of in Ireland. He is pastor of Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Cork County Ireland. He believes what we believe about the Lord's Supper. His E-mail address is [email protected]

If you need any more information, I can contact some people who are in closer contact with him in Romania and here in the U.S.

Surely, you wouldn't accuse those who are trying to be biblical in using wine in the Lord's Supper of wanting to get a buzz, especially with such a small communion cup.

I've never heard a good argument against the Corinthian church using wine as in

I Corinthians 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

It is the excess, not the content that is being reproved here.

Again, why is wine always mentioned in older confessions and articles of faith and from the Prohibition on it has been changed?

Yes, you must be cautious and not get drunk lest your testimony is ruined, and in some cases as in America, abstain in public at least except where the Lord's Supper is being observed. Personally, I and others I know who hold this position, do not drink at all except when we take the Lord's Supper.

Neil, I understand, I was just wondering. There are always those legalistic, questionable types that misrepresent Christ, who are demanding respect, looking for fights and who care not for the flock. Such persons are to be avoided and pitied.

Partaking of wine in the Lord's Supper is nothing to fear if we trust in the Lord and His Word. Most, if not all, I know of only drink alcohol in the observance of the Lord's Supper. I've known alcoholics who have been able to do this by the grace and power of God. Such a small amount of alcohol is used in some medicines and in vanilla extract in cooking.

Neil, it is a matter of conscience, for that which is not of faith is sin.

For what it is worth, I don't count you or anyone who doesn't agree with me on this issue as an enemy.

Thankfully, I know of no one of our group of churches who hold to this conviction ever becoming a drunkard or an alcoholic. We personally discourage social drinking as being not expedient for us as believers in this culture, nor do we want to put ourselves in the position of temptation.

By the way, who was your pastor at this church you are referring to?

Thanks for your response Unprofitable Servant, but, I would respectfully disagree.

Yes, we do use wine.

Just some food for thought, it is interesting in all the old confessions of faith, wine is the only designated liquid element for the Lord's Supper.

This is why I believe that Prohibition influenced many churches to do that which was politically correct at the time and change their confessions or articles of faith as research does prove.

Neil, I appreciate your perspective, but, whether it is cheaper or acceptable to culture isn't our baseline, God's Word alone. Now, the Corinthians weren't getting drunk on grape juice I'm sure, it had to be alcoholic wine as the type is biblical as well with no leaven.

I should hope not, Quiet Christian. Either way, God's Word should be no laughing matter, or have we downgraded ourselves to that level?

It seems to be forgotten that the New Testament used alcoholic wine in the Lord's Supper.

I Corinthians 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

The church at Corinth was rebuked for their excess, not the substance used. During the fermentation, the leavening agent is killed and thus, there is no leaven, and it properly represents the holy blood of Christ.

Since Prohibition, American churches went along to get along, it seems, in many regards.

To improperly represent the blood of Christ is no small matter.

Christ-mass is a religious holiday observed by Catholics and even some Protestants and Baptists. However, originally it originated from pagan Babylonian religion.

May the Lord bless you to rejoice in Christ in truth every day.
