If ever anyone had compelling reasons to stay in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), I did. I was the chairman of deacons, the State Brotherhood Secretary, the teacher of a Sunday school class averaging 150 persons per Sunday, an active lay preacher in dozens of Southern Baptist churches, and a finalist at the age of 35 for the presidency of a leading Southern Baptist university. My wife was saved in a Southern Baptist church, worked diligently as an officer in the Baptist Student Union at Florida State University, and served as a summer missionary with the SBC's Home Mission Board.
For a while we thought that trying to reverse the liberal theological trends within the SBC was biblical and that we could avoid the support of liberalism by designating our tithes and offerings rather than giving generally through the Cooperative Program.

Russell Moore is indeed a peculiar character in the Evangelical world. Moore, the head of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission has made great strides in undoing the Protestant Reformation and deemphasizing the importance of doctrinal clarity resulting in a superficial ecumenical unity among professing Christians who are more joined together around political causes than around Biblical truth.

Russell Moore has a particular affinity for the pope and the Roman Catholic church, even joining with Rick Warren to visit the Vatican to speak at a marriage conference, says he doesn’t want to see any less Rosary beads at the March for Life, and has stated that he’s unsure of the difference between his and the pope’s gospel focus. He’s even referred to himself as a uniter of Protestants and Rome.

His Roman Catholic Doctrines
In 1973, in his “Key ̓73″ crusade, Graham recommended Roman Catholic literature, especially a biography of the pope which contained hundreds of pages of Roman Catholic doctrine. This did not trouble Graham, who called it “a classic in devotion.” And in the same year he also participated in a Roman Catholic mass! – the central blasphemy of Rome.[37] In fact, on 21 October 1973 he said that he preached in a Roman Catholic cathedral, and he said of the blasphemous sacrament of the mass that it “was a very beautiful thing and certainly straight and clear in the gospel I believe.”[38]

"In the interview with Larry King in 2005, King asked him, “There is no question in your mind that he is with God now?” And Graham replied: “Oh, no. There may be a question about my own, but I don’t think Cardinal Wojtyla, or the Pope – I think he’s with the Lord, because he believed. He believed in the cross. That was his focus throughout his ministry, the cross, no matter if you were talking to him from personal issue or an ethical problem, he felt that there was the answer to all of our problems, the cross and the resurrection. And he was a strong believer.”[35]

In 1980 Graham said: “Pope John Paul II has emerged as the greatest religious leader of the modern world, and one of the greatest moral and spiritual leaders of this century”. Graham’s ecumenism, compromise, heresies, etc., are all well documented.[28] And yet millions of gullible Protestants flocked to hear him preach, and exalted him as the world’s greatest evangelist!
He was to ecumenical, Arminian “Protestantism” what John Paul II was to Romanism. In many circles he was the Protestant equivalent of the pope.
The truth, however, is that Graham was as spiritually blind as any Roman Catholic, and very much in favour of Romanism, as his words and deeds proved conclusively.

Graham met the pope of Rome in the Vatican itself, in a private audience on 11 January 1990. They discussed the status of “Christianity” in the world.[29]

His Brazen Promotion of Roman Catholicism
In 1979 he said of the pope of Rome, John Paul II (who in addition to being the head of this monstrous, false religious system, was a Communist[25]),
“I think the American people are looking for a leader, a moral and spiritual leader that believes something. And the pope does…. Thank God, I’ve got somebody to quote now with some real authority.”[26]
One would think that a supposed “Evangelical” like Billy Graham would be content to quote the Lord Jesus Christ as His authority, for “never man spake like this man” (Jn.7:46), and none has greater authority than He;
but Graham chose rather to let the Antichrist be his authority! Are we really to believe that this man was a Baptist, and a Protestant? A man who said he would quote the pope of Rome as his authority?
The answer is surely, by now, as plain as day. And yet the evidence just continued to stack up.

His Brazen Promotion of Roman Catholicism

In February 1978 Graham held a crusade in Las Vegas. Almost 200 “Protestant” churches co-operated with him in this crusade, and Roman Catholic Charismatics were active in it as well, with some of them serving as counsellors and choir members! Furthermore, Kenneth Forshee, a pastor with the Disciples of Christ – a Liberal branch of the Campbellite cult – served as the crusade chairman.[23]
In 1978 he preached in Poland, at the invitation of the Baptist Union of Poland and the Polish Ecumenical Council. He was welcomed by the Roman Catholic institution in Poland with these words: “We are happy that you will preach in several cities in Catholic churches, where the overwhelming majority of listeners will be Catholics.” Graham praised the Roman pope, John Paul I, and prayed for unity between Roman Catholics and Baptists.[24]
This was Billy Graham. An ecumenical servant of Antichrist, not Christ.

In 1963 he spoke admiringly of the pope of Rome, John XXIII,[10] saying, “I admired Pope John tremendously. I felt he brought a new era to the world. It is my hope that the cardinals elect a new pope who will follow the same line as John.
Yet John XXIII, apart from being the head of the greatest false religion on earth, was a Communist, the man who initiated the deceptive Second Vatican Council, and indeed one of the greatest deceivers of modern times![12]

At a breakfast meeting in 1963, Graham spoke of increasing co-operation between Protestants and Roman Catholics. He spoke of how the Romish bishop of Sao Paulo, Brazil, stood beside him during his crusade there and “blessed” Graham’s “converts” as they came forward at the “altar call”! And he added that he had five preaching engagements scheduled at Roman Catholic institutions in the United States.[13]

Up until that time he was just one of many Arminian Baptist evangelists beating the sawdust trail across the U.S. What was different this time? Answer: William Randolph Hearst.

Hearst was a very influential Roman Catholic news mogul; and, doubtless on the orders of his priests, he sent a telegram to his news editors with the simple instruction: “Puff Graham.” They dutifully carried out this instruction, and the increased media exposure, plus the invitations which poured in asking him to hold crusades in other places, turned Graham into a household name.[4] It was not the blessing of the Lord which did it, but a Roman Catholic news mogul under orders!
