Tim I would also say that the Spirit gives new life and a new heart to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and apart from this no one proclaims this.
1 Cor 12:3
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that -no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.-
Without the work of the Holy Ghost man does not believe God about His Son.
As the Bible says many are called but few are chosen and God will have mercy on who he will have and quickeneth who He will. That’s why few are chosen as God’s Grace through His Spirit is what gives the increase:
1 Corinthians 3:6-7
King James Version
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the giveth the increase.
Without God giving the increase there is no life. God choose a people before the foundation of the world and charged that His Son should loose none and redeem all that the Spirit quickens and gives life. The parable of the different grounds shows how the natural man is without the work of the Spirit. The Gospel (seed) is effectual when the Spirit gives good ground for it to land (a new heart).
His sheep hear His voice.

I think the problem here is that Tim doesn’t understand the work of the Spirit in redemption and the natural state of man. Man is dead in sins and he must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God.
Rom 8:7
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Someone not being born of God cannot come to the Father unless he is drawn. He is drawn to God as he is given a new heart to believe.
Ezekiel 36:26-27A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
The Spirit of God creates a new man and this creation is mirrored in creation and is made effectual by the Sprit through the Gospel.
2 Cor 4:6
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Without the work of the Spirit the Good Seed is just thrown on the stony ground instead of a heart of flesh which the Spirit gives.
Think on this verse Tim:
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Praying for you Christopher that you would know how to dwell with your wife according to knowledge.

My wife has a pretty varied group of friends, and all the wrong ones, including a former kickboxing champion, who along with her sister, Melissa, who is a travel blogger, are not only both lesbians, but heavy into the metaphysical and witchery. I've been to their home several times and to their gym for this and that, against my better judgement, but for particular functions.
On the side, they have Tarot reading parties, and psychic parties, etc, which I really wonder if my wife has been to. She does ask me if it's wrong and if I minded if she went, but I always forbid it and explained why, of course. What I'm getting at is the tragedy of her even considering it, and going if I wasn't around to stop her. She goes to mass religiously every week, must have communion, and observes all religious holidays, yet just refuses to dig into God's Word for truth. The last time I approached her about studying the bible, saying I was very concerned about her spiritually, she responded, "Oh, don't start talking about God again", as if she found Him offensive. Maybe one day she'll come around.

My friend Lurker is trying to be polite, as usual, by allowing the offenders of rule #3 to consider rule #3 without calling it out specifically.
Commenting from a smartphone or tablet, using the app itself, allows for consecutive posting, of which, I'm probably the worst offender. Nothing malicious or intentional, really,, but coupled with my big mouth, and forgetting about rule #3, well, I guess it's not fair. Might forget once in a while, but will work on that.

Yeah maybe but if you are not trying to deceive and MS/Dorcas says that she is not and that she is actually more than one person using the same IP. In that case why would you care if someone points out that you are using the same IP? It would seem to me to be a mute point. Even Mod Beta came to her defense when B Mcausland said it was an issue of integrity. Seems like much ado about nothing to me.

“ Great Sermon! ”
So moving and convicting. I thank our heavenly Father for Dean Meatheringham's beautiful, careful, and tenderly delivered sermon. After witnessing the care given to a comatose niece for over 34 years, this message was compelling enough to convert me, again. This is a great evangelistic tool as we are witnessing more and more suffering in this fallen world.

There is the old score card 40127..just to be precise? How can one be sure in the space of six weeks that these are all real conversions-hands up if you know the answer?

I would hope that there were even more converts...

Yet read a revival report in a town called Rochester in the early 19th century with thousands of converts, even the whole city. One biographer glorifies the 'facts' but TIME told a far different story.

It is better to wait before evaluating the work of God in revival, for there will always be good fruit, evidenced in time.

The west are good at manufacturing false revival, though today it isn't via Billy Graham crusades, but the likes of a Todd Bentley

Read about Rochester here and what it was like a few years later . ]]The Disappearance of revival

Then examine the 'gospel' that manufactured revival numbers and the revivalist preacher

I don't know that I fall into any of these catagories entirely. I believe that people are elected for salvation based on foreknowledge. I also believe in the depravity of man, so that he cannot save himself; every new creature in Christ is a miracle wrought by God.

I would fit in the category of an Arminian in the tradition of Wesley (and, if I am not mistaken, Arminius also); yet I would not really fit as an Arminian or a Calvinist by current popular definition. I find it very interesting how close Arminianism is to Calvinism. Often, they differ almost entirely simply in their use of terms. I believe confusion comes often when ideas are carried by reason that has not been properly tempered by Christian experience. Other times it comes when pride creeps in as it did among the apostles as they discussed who would be the greatest. I think it is interesting to note that Wesley's Arminianism did not weaken his belief in the sovereignty of God or his concept of holiness, while Whitefield's Calvinism did not reduce his fervor for evangelism.

Psalm 98 is effusive in praise to the LORD concerning His Coming. It is beautiful beyond description.

"O sing to the LORD a new song,
For He has done wonderful things,
His right hand and His holy arm have
gained the victory for Him.
The LORD has made known His salvation;
He has revealed His righteousness in
the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His lovingkindness
and His faithfulness to the house of
Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the
earth;
Break forth and sing for joy and sing
praises.
Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre;
With the lyre and the sound of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
Shout joyfully before the King, the
LORD.
Let the sea roar and all it contains,
The world and those who dwell in it.
Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the mountains sing together for joy
Before the LORD; for He is coming to
judge the earth.
He will judge the world with
righteousness,
And the peoples with equity."

The Psalm speaks of the LORD's work of Redemption and His Coming with all of creation anticipating and responding. And then, the first verse of the 99th Psalm says,

"The LORD reigns, let the people tremble;."

GLORIOUS!

But surely the "thousand years" = 1 day, - is simply an analogical device to provide the (infinite) extent of God's perception, compared with mortal, rather than literal time?
"Secret things belong to the Lord, but the things revealed belong to man."

Everything that God says has a reason. Of course you agree.

But, the question is: Why did God say, "A thousand years is as a day, and a day, as a thousand years?" when talking about the new heavens and new earth and coming judgment in 2 Peter.

Since we know that God exists eternally, there is no need to clue us in on that with a direct correlation between 1 day and 1,000 yrs.

He purposefully, said, "One day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day" for our understanding.

In Daniel, speaking of the time of the end, Scripture says, "In the latter days, you will understand."

I think God intrigues us with the depth of His Word and the riches that He unfolds to us over time.

He made us curious as humans, and that curiousity also drives us to seek to understand the difficult passages.

But when IS the "last days"???
Has the "last days" period lasted 2000 years thus far???
Oh, I'd say 2000 yrs. closer than it was when this Scripture was
written.

So, I'd re-state my position - "Looking for that glorious appearing of our Great, God and Saviour."

P.S. Not to appear flippant, I might add the Scripture that says, "One day is as thousand yrs., and a thousand yrs. as a day." That being the case, only two days have passed since that Scripture was given. If creation itself is tied to the 7 day week, then, we'd be in the 6th day, and the Sabbath day is coming - the time of blessedness and rest in the Kingdom of God. I think the pattern of 6 days of creation and the 7th day of rest holds as a metaphor for the time of man and earth and the curse and redemption and consummation. But, go ahead, rake me over the coals if you disagree.

I wouldn't call the view that things will get worse and worse until Christ comes, a pessimistic view. I would call it Scriptural, and, for the Believer looking for the return of the Lord, I would call it "that Blessed Hope." So, even though the world is waxing worse and worse, this is an indication that the time is near for the Lord's return. I'm excited.

2 Tim. 3:1-4 says, "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:

For men will be:

*lovers of themselves,

*lovers of money,

*boasters,

*proud,

*blasphemers,

*disobedient to parents,

*unthankful,

*unholy,

*unloving,

*unforgiving,

*slanderers,

*without self-control,

*brutal,

*despisers of good,

*traitors,

*headstrong,

*haughty,

*lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,"

If ever the descriptive words above marked the attitudes of humankind, it is NOW!

"Looking for that Blessed Hope and Glorious appearing of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ."
