I sang the part of Caiphas ("tell this rabble to be quiet, we anticipate a riot, this common crowd...is much too loud")when my youth group performed the opera in the PCUSA church in the 1970s. It was the beginning of the trend to market Christianity to youth, something still going on today with Rick Warren's books, Christian contemporary/rock music, simpler Bible translations like The Message, etc. Is it diluting the true faith or is it another way to practice "go out to the world and preach the gospel to all...?" On the other hand, the actor had to say something positive about the opera. He would not say, "You know, this is real garbage, not what the Bible teaches at all!" Maybe he should, and get more audience from hard-core nonbelievers. God used a pagan emperor to rebuild Jerusalem under Nehemiah's direction, so he could do His work with pagan Hollywood actors. |
