Michael, The reason I stated predestination is a most excellent and comforting New Testament truth is because of statements such as these: "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."(Rom. 8:29 & 30)"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world...Having predestinated us us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will."(Eph. 1:4&5) "God hath from the beginning chosen you for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."(2 Thess. 2:13&14) Notice in each passage that God's predestination and foreknowledge is built on the foundation of Christ(his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord Jesus Christ, etc), so it is not man-centered. Each passage points to the work of Jesus Christ. It is not my work, but God's work through His Son. Hope that helps. |

Mercy wrote: Over the years, I have read commentaries, listened to pastors, etc., and, over time, found that what I believe lines up with Calvin's TULIP, but I have not read Calvin. I have a rudimentary knowledge of Calvin and Reformed Theology. Same here, particularly in the arena of church practice lining up with the Regulative Principle...also most of the TULIP. Reformed theology is plenty scriptural and Reformed practice(in the context of the Regulative Principle) is quite practical and simple...Biblical, to put in simply. Doctrines like predestination, God's will in the salvation of man, and preservation of the saints are clearly taught in the New Testament and are foundational in Reformed theology. Although not attending a Protestant Reformed church at this time, this is the faith I have come to embrace, confess and defend. |
