Chris,

I appreciate your discussion and with love in my heart for you, I would love to continue the dialogue.

On the topic of rejecting certain Hadith while remaining a true Muslim: many Hadith are certainly true and I believe in many of them. However their authority and authenticity has to be judged with reference to the Word of God. It has been much better said by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (pboh): "If the purport of a Hadith is not opposed to the Book of Allah, it would be accepted as authoritative, but we will not accept an interpretation of a[n] Hadith which is opposed to the clear text of the Holy Quran. So far as possible, we shall try to interpret a Hadith so that it should be in accord with the clear text of the Book of Allah, but if we come across a Hadith which is opposed to the text of the Holy Quran, and it cannot be interpreted in any other way, we would reject it as spurious, inasmuch as God, the Glorious, has said: In what discourse apart from Allah and His commandments will they believe? [45:7]

This means that if the Holy Quran is conclusive and positive abou t a matter and its meaning is clear, a believer should not accept a Hadith which is clearly opposed to it." Essence of Islam, vol. 2, p. 134.

I would like to quote some verses of the Holy Quran and Hadith that support it, from the compilation of Hadith titled _Gardens of the Righteous_:

Allah, the Exalted, has said:
13. O ye who believe, be mindful of your duty to Allah and keep company with the righteous (9.119)

14. Men who are truthful and women who are truthful (33.36).

15. Had they been true to their duty to Allah, it would have been the better for them (47.22).

Hadith:
54. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud relates that the Holy Prophet said: Truth guides to virtue and virtue guides to Paradise. A person persists in telling the truth till in the sight of Allah he is named Truthful. Lying leads to vice and vice leads to the Fire; and a person goes on lying till in the sight of Allah he is named a liar (Bokhari and Muslim).

55. Hasan ibn Ali relates that he learnt the following from the Holy Prophet: Leave alone that which involves thee in doubt and adhere to that which is free from doubt, for truth is comforting, falsehood is disturbing (Tirmidhi).

I agree. God's law is excellent.

Chris, you have it totally wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth that you said. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was the greatest example in fulfilling promises and keeping true to one's word. This allegation you have brought forward is a fabrication. Muslims are taught to love all mankind. Telling the truth is an extremely high moral value that is a commandment of God. A Muslim is taught to have sympathy and love for all mankind. The fact is that the Holy Quran is a higher authority than these Hadith. So if any Hadith appear to contradict the Holy Quran, then those Hadith may not be accurate as to what the Holy Prophet (pboh) said and either we have not understood them properly or they should be rejected.

The Quranic verse is not giving permission to lie under compulsion. The verse is also not necessarily saying that someone has lied, but perhaps can fall into this situation by not manifesting his belief during an extreme situation where his life is in imminent danger from a persecutor. There may be certain extreme situations of religious persecution where a weak believer may make this mistake or sin. God is saying His wrath on disbelievers is not final who are under certain extreme circumstances of persecution who actually believe. In verse 111, if such a person makes amends, remains steadfast, and actively promotes the cause of God, in other words, he has not committed that sin again but has become stronger in faith, God can forgive, for He is Most Forgiving and Merciful. God is the Master of the Day of Judgement and He knows what is in everyone’s hearts. Lying is a sin and the Holy Quran exhorts speaking the truth. “O ye who believe! Fear God and say the straightforward word.” 33:71. “Truthful men and truthful women…God has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward” 33:36 “Hide not testimony; he who hides it, his heart is certainly sinful” 2:284. “And when you speak, observe justice (tell the truth and hold the scales even), even if the person concerned by a relative

From the writings of the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (peace be on him):
That light of high degree that was bestowed on perfect man was not in angels, was not in stars, was not in the moon, was not in the sun, was not in the oceans and the rivers, was not in rubies or emeralds, or sapphires, or pearls; in short, it was not in any earthly or heavenly object. It was only in perfect man whose highest and loftiest and most perfect example was our lord and master, the Chief of the Prophets, the Chief of all living ones, Muhammad, the chosen one, peace be on him. That light was bestowed on this man and, according to their ranks, upon all those who bore the same colour to some degree.... This dignity was found in its highest and most perfect form in our lord and master and our guide, the immaculate Prophet, the righteous one, testified to by the righteous, Muhammad, the chosen one, peace be on him [Ayenae Kamalat-e-Islam, (Qadian, Riyadh Hind Press 1893); Now printed in Ruhani Khazain (London, 1984), Vol.5, pp. 160-162].

Jacob,

The teachings of the Holy Quran are about love, peace, and goodwill among mankind. Those who misunderstand these verses, whether Muslim or Christian, have taken God's commandments out of context. These commandments of self-defense are only for a very special circumstance: for freedom of religion for ALL religions and to put an end to such severe persecution where the persecutor wants to murder someone for worshipping God. However, in today's age where freedom of religion is the norm, that situation does not apply.

God teaches us to love on another, as He says "Try to promote accord between yourselves" 8:2 "Peace is best" 4:129 "The true servants of the Gracious One walk upon the earth in humility" 25:64 "He united your hearts in love so that by His Grace you became as brothers" 3:104 "Say to people that which is good" 2:84 "Let not one people deride another people" 49:12 "Be benevolent towards your fellow human beings, for God loves those who are benevolent" 2:196 "Slacken not in serving your fellow beings" 4:105 "Repel evil with that which is best, and lo, he, between whom and thyself was enmity, will become as though he were a warm friend."
